Top Gun: Maverick

Corgi Still Feels the Need for Speed

Corgi’s Top Gun Maverick 2020 Maverick’s F/A-18 Hornet (Fit to Box)

Capitalizing on the success of their Showcase Series twin aircraft sets, Corgi unexpectedly announced the imminent arrival of a brand new SKU that focuses solely on Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s F/A-18 as depicted in the feature film Top Gun: Maverick. Nothing new has been added or embellished to the model but for those collectors that would prefer to nab his aircraft all by its lonesome, now you can do so. Best of all, these should be in stock by the beginning of October making them an ideal stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season. Word of advice — better “feel the need for speed” sooner rather than later cause these collectibles are almost certain to sell out once word pf Maverick’s legendary exploits spreads.

Maverick Supersonic

With just a week to go before the debut of Top Gun: Maverick in North American theaters, reports are surfacing from a variety of sources that the film is set to wow moviegoers this summer. Many are already claiming it will break box office records now and well into the foreseeable future an amazing feat considering the first film hit the silver screen way back in 1986. In fact, several days ago, GQ Magazine claimed “Top Gun: Maverick is the greatest blockbuster of the decade,” and, at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival, the movie supposedly received a five minute standing ovation from the select devotees granted an early viewing.

That said, its still difficult to understand why none of the major diecast modelmakers have taken steps to offer replicas of those aircraft portrayed in the film. Granted, Paramount Pictures, who owns the rights to the film, is asking a hefty licensing fee to produce a collector quality set of replicas, and Tom Cruise, the star of the film, is likely standing in the way of permitting his likenesses from being overlaid onto any pilot figure. Nevertheless, I would have thought that a workaround could have been devised by now whereby collectors could have their cake and eat it too even if they have to pay a premium for a model based on the latest Top Gun feature film. While a day and date release would have no doubt sold into the tens of thousands, we know from firsthand experience gleaned from Top Gun that replicas for the original film were still selling extremely well over thirty years after it was first shown. Time will tell if a diecast modelmaker will reevaluate their stance, pony up the necessary cash, and eventually churn out what can only be described as the best selling model of the decade, if the GQ boast can be applied here as well.

Mattel Trips Up the Red Light Cameras with its “Need for Speed”

No stranger to the diecast market thanks to their longstanding Hot Wheels and Matchbox sub brands, Mattel unveiled the first look at their upcoming line of Top Gun merchandise at the American International Toy Fair. Based upon the upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick, CNN’s article showcases some of the product destined to come out under the Matchbox moniker, which includes, among other things, an aircraft carrier playset and a handful of aircraft. Presently, we do not believe that the expose represents the entire Top Gun lineup, since none of the higher end aircraft models alluded to previously were on display. As a result, we hope to have more information in the days and weeks ahead. In the meantime, stop on by the CNN web site to see what has been discussed.

Mattel and Paramount Feel the Need for Speed

Toymaker Mattel has inked a global deal with Paramount Pictures to produce a line of diecast toys, aircraft, playsets and other pertinent products based upon the upcoming film, Top Gun: Maverick. The agreement also covers the original film, Top Gun, which came out in the mid 1980s.

According to NBC, which broke the news back on July 26th, the line will be available ahead of the film’s debut, which is currently set for June 26th, 2020. Its not clear if this is an exclusive agreement, thereby shutting out TSM Model Wings from making or selling any Top Gun-related diecast products. TSM has held a licensing deal with Paramount for some time and, as of last week, still maintains that they will be producing a range of diecast aircraft based upon both films.

This time around, Mitchel has traded in his F-14 Tomcat for a F/A-18 Super Hornet and, among other things, is seen defending his legacy as an ace and Top Gun graduate.
