Forces of Valor Raises the Arizona

fov86013a

Perhaps as a fitting tribute to the 75th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Waltersons posted images of their resurrected USS Arizona battleship, an integral part of their reinvigorated Forces of Valor warships range (FOV86013). As you can see, Waltersons has been making adjustments to each of the former models where deemed necessary, all designed to bring them up today’s standards. In the Arizona’s case, Waltersons states that “the colour scheme had been revised to the 1941 Pearl Harbour version, with bright red turret roof and medium blue colour on the hull body.” The model sits atop a wood-like display plinth with metallic rods and, when completed, will boast a metallic nameplate featuring the name of the warship. Look for the first warships to set sail some time in early 2017.

Waltersons Adds More Punch to its R/C Lineup

15259736_907570766010880_4287246498941730564_o

Over the weekend, Waltersons, the new owners of the Forces of Valor brand, uploaded an intriguing post which disclosed how the Company is supporting the curious if successful Girls und Panzer brand within Japan by offering a wide array of licensed 1:24 scale military vehicles. Four of the new Forces of Valor vehicles have obviously been repainted to fit the Girls und Panzer theme, however, what really caught our attention are some of the vehicles included in the brochure that are designed to widen the license’s appeal in 2017. Some of the vehicles featured in the Girls und Panzer handbook include a US M3 Lee medium tank, German Hetzer tank destroyer, German Sturmgeschutz assault gun, Russian IS-2 heavy tank, Russian T-34/76 medium tank, Russian KV-2 heavy tank, French B1bis heavy tank, German VK4501(P) heavy tank, Japanese Chi-Nu heavy tank, Japanese Chi-Ha medium tank, US T-28 super heavy tank, German Morser Karl self-propelled gun, British A41 main battle tank, variants of the M4 Sherman tank, British Churchill infantry tank, Italian CV33 light tank, Russian BT-42 light tank, and Japanese Ha-Go medium tank. Whew! Quite a proposed lineup. These same vehicles will more than likely be included in the Forces of Valor R/C lineup going forward with more to follow, if intuition serves as any guide.

Is There Hope for the Minichamps Military Range?

min350010002

Several years ago, Minichamps decided to pull the plug on their highly popular range of 1:35 scale military vehicles, citing rising costs as the principal reason for its end. Since that time, we’ve heard from many collectors world over who were dismayed by the sudden stoppage, both thrilled with their replicas and obviously ecstatic over their rise in value since they were no longer available.

While doing a routine search on the Internet this weekend, we noticed one UK retailer had four of the Minichamps vehicles listed as “relaunches” (Tiger I heavy tank, Panther medium tank, Jagdpanther tank destroyer and 251/1 halftrack), although no further information regarding their dates of availability and other pertinent data were listed. We’re not sure if Minichamps does indeed plan to bring out these vehicles going forward, however, we wouldn’t be surprised. The February Toy Fair at Nuremberg, Germany, where most new products are announced, is just a couple of months away and, just a few months ago, Waltersons picked up the entire Forces of Valor range with plans to rebrand and relaunch the entire series.

If this is true, this is obviously terrific news for the collecting community, and we’ll post further details as we learn them. Keep your fingers crossed.

New Line: Panzerkampf

pzk121id

Evey so often, a new line of diecast military vehicles seems to pop up on the radar screen that catches us completely by surprise. One such brand is Panzerkampf, a new Chinese company that seems to be offering several subjects that no one else has done before such as a three-piece Israeli Iron Dome missile defense shield set. It would appear as if they plan to offer a T-14 Armata main battle tank too as well as a T-15 Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the core of the new armored forces currently being fielded by Russia.

Now here’s the rub. We’ll be posting all of this information on Friday since its my youngest daughter’s wedding day today, which obviously takes precedence over any new product information. We hope you join us in the celebration and I know you can wait just one more day before we shed further light on this new manufacturer and their interesting mix of products.

Calibre Wings Hints at the Devil in the Details

vf-74_01

Perhaps riding atop a wave of enthusiasm since revealing the first product photos of their upcoming F-14s, Calibre Wings hinted at the seventh version of their 1:72 scale Tomcat, no doubt due out some time in early 2017. Earlier today, the manufacturer posted an image of “Satan in the Cross Hairs” on their Facebook page, likely indicating that VF-74 “Be-Devilers” would be their next choice for an F-14 replica. Before being disestablished in 1994, after 50 years of service, VF-74 served as an aggressor squadron that was pitted against various US Navy and Air Force squadrons. So, we don’t think its a stretch to conclude that an aggressor livery will likely be chosen to commemorate this illustrious squadron, perhaps one designed to resemble a Russian-built Su-27 fighter.

Product Spotlight: Mustangs Over Berlin

aa27703

“The Mustang was a good fighter and the best escort due to its incredible range, make no mistake about it. It was also the best American dogfighter. But the laminar flow wing fitted to the Mustang could be a little tricky. It could not by any means out-turn a Spitfire. No way. It had a good rate-of-roll, better than the Spitfire, so I would say the pluses to the Spitfire and the Mustang just about equate. If I were in a dogfight, I’d prefer to be flying the Spitfire. The problem was I wouldn’t like to be in a dogfight near Berlin, because I could never get home to Britain in a Spitfire!”

– RAF Chief Naval Test Pilot and C.O. Captured Enemy Aircraft Flight Capt. Eric Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, RN, after testing the Mustang at RAE Farnborough in March 1944

In the face of mounting competition and constant calls for keeping up on their game, Corgi has begun to offer several re-tooled 1:72 scale North American P-51 Mustangs that are aimed at recapturing the imagination of their collector base. Their latest venture, an RAF North American Mustang Mk. IV Fighter was piloted by Werner Christie of No. 150 Wing during the Spring of 1945 (AA27703).

aa27703a

The final victory for a WWII RAF Mustang belonged to Norwegian ace, Werner Christie, who was flying his personal machine KH790. Following the conclusion of a successful bomber escort mission over Germany, Christie led his Mustangs in search of Luftwaffe fighters. Flying above Finow airfield, he noticed a flight of Fw 190s and immediately dived to attack. His first burst of fire caught the wing of an unsuspecting Focke Wulf, blowing half of the wing off and sending the fighter spiralling into the ground. This would be Christie’s eleventh and final victory of the war.

As part of their retooling program, Corgi’s latest squadron of Mustangs (AA27701-AA27703) now feature interchangeable wing flaps that allow the collector to choose between up and down positions.

Minichamps Bikes Slowly Begin to Reappear

min122123001g

We were beginning to give up hope that we would ever see another Minichamps motorcycle make it to market. The pair of 1:12 scale Vincent motorcycles announced by the Company some eight years are still, for all intents and purposes, “motorcycle ware”, with nary an image shown nor a release date specified. Happily, however, we learned that their 1975 Benelli in silver is still expected without delay, with a firm street date of around the end of November.

We look forward to resuming shipments of Minichamps classic bikes and hope lots more items are in store in the near future.

Corgi Hits the Big 6-0

corgi-60th-anniversary-collection-logo

Few companies can claim to being around 25 years, much less reaching the big 6-0. Yet British model maker, Corgi, has done just that, lighting and blowing out sixty candles on their birthday cake, one for every year of their existence. To celebrate the event, they are rolling out several commemorative aircraft, including two Battle of Britain era warbirds that helped protect the realm from Nazi aggression some 76 years ago.

aa39211

The first up for your consideration is a RAF Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I fighter that was piloted by Squadron Leader Rupert ‘Lucky’ Leigh, who was attached to No.66 Squadron, then deployed to Gravesend, England, during September 1940 (AA39211).

aa27603

Meanwhile the second portrays a RAF Hawker Hurricane Mk. 1 Fighter that was piloted by Sgt. J.H “Ginger” Lacey, who was attached to No.501 Squadron, also based at Gravesend, England during September 1940 (AA27603). Look for both aircraft, in specially designed commemorative packaging, some time in November.

Calibre Wings Confirms the Su-24 is Up Next

sukhoi_su-24

Newcomer Calibre Wings has disclosed that their next new tooling will be a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer attack aircraft. The announcement was made on Facebook, lately the de rigeur venue for new project announcements from a number of model makers. No word was given concerning the exact release date, price, model or livery to be chosen for their inaugural Fencer, although it would appear as if the first version will be a Fencer-D complete with a refueling probe.
