Altaya Packs on the Pounds for the Holidays

2152

If you like ’em big and beefy, and we’re not talking hot dogs here folks, then you may want to check out Altaya’s brand new range of 1:43 scale military vehicles headed to market. Thus far, four vehicles are being shown on their web site: a US M4A3 Sherman medium tank, German Tiger I heavy tank, Elefant tank destroyer and Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer. While we don’t have pricing or dates of availability just yet, it appears as if the line will be affordable and broad, likely designed to appeal to collectors of the Eaglemoss and Atlas Editions 1:43 scale ranges. We hope to have more concrete information shortly.

Fancy Yourself a Shuttlecraft Pilot?

Shuttlecraft 2

While a transporter may work for some fleet personnel to get from point A to point B, its sometimes safer to hop aboard a Star Trek shuttlecraft to avoid getting your molecules whipped around the galaxy. That said, we are now accepting pre-orders for the Eaglemoss Star Trek Shuttlecraft collection, which is expected to arrive this January. The set is specially packaged and comes with four different shuttlecraft as seen in the televised series and some of the feature films.

Shuttlecraft 3

Also included is an eight-page booklet (measuring 150 x 210 mm) which exclusively contains “in-universe” information accompanies each model. It features master systems display illustrations (okudagrams) newly created for each issue by Mike Okuda. These schematics are also printed onto 120 x 80 mm translucent plastic sheets which can be mounted on (included) clip stands.

Corgi Nestles More Gifts Under the Christmas Tree

aa32624

Originally we had been told that Corgi would not release a winter catalog this year. In a strange turn of events, the manufacturer belayed that ordered and announced a bunch of newcomers to their Aviation Archive portfolio, some of which are due out right after the holiday season concludes. One of the key releases is this Avro Lancaster Mk. III heavy bomber (AA32624), which is slated to make its initial bombing run in January. We’re currently in the process of listing all of the notable introductions expected the first half of 2016, but decided to post this one first just to whet your appetite.

“Pilots, Check Your Six-th”

Northrop 6th

While drones seem to have taken center stage over the past few years, two prime aircraft manufacturers have unveiled concept artwork showing their respective versions of a sixth generation manned fighter. Both employ stealthy characteristics, looking more like scaled down versions of a B-2 Spirit bomber than a true dogfighter. However, that’s where the similarities end, since both are expected to offer supercruise capability, carry large internal weapons bays toting a wide array of ordnance, be able to fly for long distances, and, most importantly, be armed with a laser cannon to ward off close range targets.

Lockheed 6th

Both concepts feature a tailless design, twin engines and are oversized in comparison to previous fighters if they are to meet all of the Pentagon’s design requirements, and provide heat dissipation solutions to cool off the engines, power plant and laser cannons. Its unclear if the USMC will be equipped with a sixth generation fighter due to their need for a VTOL flight profile. The Northrop design is shown atop while the competing Lockheed Martin effort is shown below it. Interestingly, the Lockheed-Martin illustration seems to show two men in the cockpit, perhaps one controlling the myriad weapons systems and defensive components while the pilot flies the plane.

Boeing-FA-XX-sixth-gen-fighterBoeing’s concept for their FA-XX sixth generation fighter is a bit different than the previous two entrants, sporting a canard wing for added stability in-flight. The Navy version will likely feature strengthened undercarriages for carrier operations and will likely come with folding wing tips for stowage, particularly if they are much larger than the legacy aircraft they are being designed to replace.

Star Trek Goes Way Beyond its Roots

EMSTSP04b

Perhaps looking to steal a bit of thunder from the Star Wars Premiere event being held in LA tonight, the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released today. The usual array of characters and cast reprise their respective roles, with lots of new characters thrown into the mix. In related news, the project manager for Eaglemoss’ Star Trek Starship Collection confirmed via Twitter over the weekend that the range has been expanded to at least 110 standard ships, as well as additional special edition ships, shuttlecraft and other paraphernalia. This will likely take the range into early 2017, when a new CBS hosted Star Trek television series is set to kick off, meaning more races, venues, ships and other Trekkie-related gear. So, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to open in a few days, Star Wars: Rogue One scheduled to debut next year, it looks like sci-fi fanatics will have lots to crow about for the next several years.

Imex Fires on all Cylinders this Winter

Imex Catalog

Imex has gone to the trouble of creating a handsome online catalog that shows off their entire radio controlled product portfolio from soup to nuts. We noticed several new items slated for a 2016 roll out, including 1:16 scale M4 Sherman tanks – one with a 76 mm gun and another with a 105mm gun – a Panther Ausf. F medium tank, 1:16 scale figures, and even a terrific assortment of 1:72 scale “Perma-Scene” back drops, ideal for displaying with your 1:72 scale diecast armor collection. Pricing and dates of availability are still in the formative stage, so for now, enjoy their wares by visiting this link:

Hobby Master Shows Off Their Holiday Handiwork

HA5201d

At this point in time, Hobby Master could be considered an old hand in the modelmaking business, outlasting several recent newcomers and a number of older players. A visionary, to be sure, they’ve finally taken the wraps off of some of their early 2016 releases, giving them a leg up on the competition when things seem to be heating up in a big way. With Top Gun 2 on the way, perhaps their most important early 2016 product line is the Grumman F-14 Fleet Defense Fighter, the workhorse of the US Navy for well over three decades. Their first effort is this F-14A, which was attached to VF-211 “Fighting Checkmates” (HA5201). Unlike the comparable Century Wings F-14, the Hobby Master version features variable geometry wings, which means you can display the plane in either a launch or flat-out, afterburner-fueled configuration.

HA4901

Also up for your consideration is their first US Navy Lockheed S-3B Viking Anti-Submarine Aircraft, another integral part of US carrier operations for the better half of the twentieth century. While it may not be as sexy as an F-14, the S-3B is a key member of the carrier air wing, designed to seek out and destroy nearby hunter-killer submarines that pose a risk to the task force. This particular S-3B was attached to VS-21 “Fighting Redtails”, then embarked upon the USS Independence (CV-62) during the 1990s (HA4901).
