Century Wings Sounds the Intruder Alert

CWUSNAG514

Japanese model maker, Century Wings, has announced plans to produce two new 1:72 scale versions of the Grumman A-6 Intruder later this October. One model replicates a US Navy Grumman A-6E Intruder Attack Aircraft that was attached to VA-75 “Sunday Punchers”, then embarked upon the USS Independence.

CWUSNNE522

The second depicts a US Navy Grumman KA-6D Intruder Refueling Aircraft that was attached to VA-145 “Swordsmen”, then embarked upon the USS Saratoga. While the new birds are priced substantially higher than their predecessors of years past, they do augment the steady diet of F-14s this company had been producing for the better part of a year.

Falcon Models Professes ‘the Lion is King’

FA729002

Hot on the heels of their announced Kfir Multi-Role aircraft comes word that Falcon Models will also be selling two versions of the F-21 Lion, which were Kfirs leased to both the US Navy and US Marine Corps during the late 80s. Twenty-five modified Kfir C.1s were used in the US arsenal to act as adversary aircraft in dissimilar air combat training (DACT). We’ve posted both models (FA729002 and FA729003)  in the Falcon Models section and anticipate delivery in September.

Hobby Master Proves its Listening

HL9012

Ordinarily, we take a pass when it comes to listing civil airliners on our web site, largely because this isn’t our core competency. Add to that the fact that we generally sidestep the smallish 1:200 scale sector, and you can readily see why we prefer to go with larger scale replicas with military overtones. However, when Hobby Master announced that it planned to offer a 1:200 scale Lockheed EC-121D Warning Star Aircraft (#HL9012), we were all ears, figuratively as well as literally. Measuring approximately 7 inches in length by about 7-1/2 inches across, a 1:200 scale representation of this iconic early warning flier seemed to fit the bill, offering unrivaled fidelity and decent scale at a price most collectors can afford. Expected some time in September, we believe aviation enthusiasts will enjoy adding this important aircraft to their diecast collection.

RIO Makes an Encore Performance

RIO4342

Recently, we lamented how Signature Models 1:18 scale line of G4 parade limousines were delayed yet again. On the plus side, we’ve just received our long awaited shipment of RIO 1:43 scale parade limousines, which had been on back order for several months. Three 1938 Mercedes Benz 770K limousines comprise the range, one depicting Field Marshal Erwin Rommel standing in a desert yellow command car (RIO4342), while the other two contain the Nazi leadership (RIO4064P and RIO4250P) and other figures.

All three models are available in extremely limited quantities and there’s no telling when they’ll be restocked by the manufacturer.

Why Do New Items Take So Long to Materialize?

chinese-chicken-factory

In a recent report by Bloomberg News (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-06/where-have-china-s-workers-gone-.html), we may have reached the point where China is no longer the growth engine of the world. As strange as it may sound, there appears to be a severe shortage of skilled labor in China that has had an adverse effect on the diecast model making business, in particular. Add to that the rising cost of labor each and every year and what results is a brew that could spell serious problems for the collecting community and the vendors that serve them.

G4

Take the Signature line of 1:18 scale G4 limousines as an example, a range of high end historic memorabilia that many people have been waiting patiently to acquire. Last year, we learned that the manufacturer planned on offering the model in matte grey, to go along with their previously released off white and all black versions. Grey, of course, is viewed as the most coveted color of the three since it is most closely associated with The Third Reich’s “grey column” of parade limousines that routinely toured Germany’s cities in the run up to World War II. Last year, we were informed that the item would be ready by December, and would carry a suggested retail price of $89.99. As the holidays neared, we were informed they would be delayed until May 2013, and would weigh in at around $109.99. Now, we’ve been told that the vehicles are being delayed again until September, and will likely sell for around $129.99.

This same scenario seems be occurring with alarming frequency throughout the modelmaking world, as more and more manufacturers are reporting delays, rising costs and continual reasons why they are unable to bring product to market in a timely and cost effective manner. While this doesn’t necessarily spell the end of the collecting hobby as we know it, it does raise several red flags, particularly when the economy is supposedly on the rebound and talk of the Internet Sales Tax continues to gain momentum in Congress.

Hobby Master Returns to MiG Alley

HA4301

Even though tension on the Korean Peninsula seems to have subsided of late, that doesn’t mean diecast modelmakers can’t take an interest in the decades long hot spot. Hobby Master, for one, plans to reopen old wounds with their first ever 1:72 scale replica of the North American F-86 Sabre jet — the very jet that wrested control away from the North Korean Air Force during the early stages of the Korean Conflict. Other new aircraft and combat vehicles were also announced, all part of their September 2013 arsenal. We hope to have all of their latest product announcements up on our web site shortly.

Falcon Lights the Afterburners on the F-11 Tiger

FA728001

Falcon Models recently debuted pictures for its upcoming Grumman F-11 Tiger, the first supersonic, single-seat carrier-based United States Navy fighter aircraft in operation during the 1950s and 1960s. Based upon a bird flown by VF-21 (#FA728001), the Tiger is expected to touch down in June, along with several other notable new aircraft, among them a German Fieseler Fi-156C Storch ambulance (#FA724009).

We’ve been impressed with the cavalcade of new aircraft coming out of Falcon, who has quickly become one of the leading manufacturers of diecast military aircraft.

The Internet Sales Tax: Will it Affect You?

Sales Tax

If, as many believe, the proposed “Internet Sales Tax” passes both houses of Congress some time in May, shoppers may have to pay an additional fee for purchasing products online. While this is certainly an inconvenience and affects customers even in “zero sales tax” states, there is a a silver lining to the law. Vendors who rack up sales of less than $1,000,000 per year are purportedly exempt from the ruling, while those doing more must collect the new sales tax. While we’re successful, having been at this for 13 years, our annual sales do not meet this sales tax threshold, meaning we would not have to collect sales tax for anyone residing outside of New York, where we are located. Other similar retailers may not be so fortunate depending upon their sales volume, so it may pay to check around before you buy if you’re looking to save some hard earned coin.
