Century Wings Continues to Sky Rocket in Value

CW001601

What do you say when you see 1:72 scale Century Wings F-14s commanding $500 or more on ebay and people more than willing to pay the price? Even the recently released VX-9 Vampires, ‘Vandy 1’ (#CW001601), is already going for well in excess of its MSRP, just a week after its debut. When you consider the fact that the global economy is still recovering, that’s saying a lot for a company that seems willing to pump out more of the same year after year.

Anyway, we hope more of the F-14s, SR-71s and other aircraft CW has been known to pump out are in the pipeline, since it says a lot for the manufacturer, its products, and impeccable standing within the diecast community.

Century Wings Resurrects the Dead

CW001604

On the plus side, Century Wings has gotten over its infatuation with the F-14 Tomcat to produce some additional aircraft for 2013. On the down side, no new tooling(s) have been announced thus far, instead more of their older aircraft types at vastly inflated prices. Don’t get us wrong, its nice to see a new Vought A-7E Corsair II attack aircraft parked on the tarmac for the latter half of this year (#CW001604), however, the choice of scheme, price, and proximity to the holidays could have been better planned. No offense to the Ohio National Guard, but an A-7E in southeast Asian camouflage would have generated a lot more interest, especially when their first SEA Corsair II is fetching big bucks in the after market. It also appears as if a $117 price point will be the new normal for Century Wings’ smaller aircraft types (A-6 Intruder and A-7 Corsair II), twice that of comparable Hobby Master jets, such as their F-16 and F-4 Phantoms. We’re happy to see that they are still in the scale aircraft game when others were giving up on them, its just that we have to wonder how they can justify their stance when some of their key competitors are doing well enough at much lower asking prices.

Century Wings Sounds the Intruder Alert

CWUSNAG514

Japanese model maker, Century Wings, has announced plans to produce two new 1:72 scale versions of the Grumman A-6 Intruder later this October. One model replicates a US Navy Grumman A-6E Intruder Attack Aircraft that was attached to VA-75 “Sunday Punchers”, then embarked upon the USS Independence.

CWUSNNE522

The second depicts a US Navy Grumman KA-6D Intruder Refueling Aircraft that was attached to VA-145 “Swordsmen”, then embarked upon the USS Saratoga. While the new birds are priced substantially higher than their predecessors of years past, they do augment the steady diet of F-14s this company had been producing for the better part of a year.

A Black Cat Crosses Century Wings’ Path

CW001601

With Toy Fair all but a distant memory, we were beginning to wonder when Century Wings would announce its next project. According to our distributor, this Japanese-based model maker has announced that it will be offering yet another F-14 Tomcat, this time around painted in midnight black and bearing the markings of the US Navy’s VX-9 “Vampires” (#CW001601). Don’t get us wrong – Century Wing’s F-14s always seem to sell out, largely due to their incredible detail, relatively low production runs, and cult-like following. It’s just that it would be nice to see some new toolings appear at this stage in their life cycle, something dealers and fans have been requesting for quite some time. Look for a June arrival for the latest ‘Cat.

Century Wings Closes Out the Year on a High Note

CW001211

No stranger to the world of high-flying replicas, Century Wings has at last released a pair of SR-71A Blackbirds into the retail channel. Depicting two reconnaissance aircraft that were attached to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, deployed out of Kadena AB, Alaska, in 1977, these “fast-movers” are living up to their nickname, quite literally flying off the shelves (#CW001211 & #CW001228).

CW001228

We’re not sure if Century Wings will ever revisit the SR-71 considering that they’re under new management, so now might be a good time to scrutinize these Cold War warriors before they fly off into history.

Century Wings Holds Up Its Latest F-14 for Scrutiny

CW001600

Delayed until January, Century Wings has finally rolled open its hangar doors so onlookers can peruse their latest F-14 installment. Based upon a bird that served with VF-1 “Wolfpack,” during 1991 (CW001600), their newest Fleet Defense Fighter boasts loads of armament and hi-fidelity features we’ve all come to expect from Century Wings. We’re hoping that more new aircraft aren’t too far behind, possibly including some new aircraft types long rumored to be languishing on the drawing board.
