Hobby Master Concludes, “It Does Feel the Need for Speed”

With Top Gun: Maverick continuing to break box office records, it was perhaps a matter of time before one model maker ponied up the big bucks to secure the coveted Top Gun license. Earlier today, we learned that Hobby Master plans on producing a 50th Anniversary F/A-18F Hornet strike fighter. Its likely other Top Gun inspired aircraft will eventually be offered, from F-14 Tomcats to so-called fifth generation fighters (a.k.a. Su-57 Felon fighters), although we could be jumping the “Top Gun” by putting out such rumors. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Its not clear if the pilot figure will resemble Tom Cruise since he seems to be reluctant to agree to having his face adorn any kind of figure but the simple work-around is to put a seated pilot figure in the cockpit with his visor lowered over his face and the “Maverick” call sign splashed across the top of his helmet.

Anyway, we have listed this item on our web site and have begun accepting pre-orders. Keep in mind Hobby Master will likely be producing a thousand copies or more of this particular model to recoup their tidy investment. Still, this model will likely become a centerpiece for many a collector who, like Hobby Master, continue to “feel the need for speed.” 😛

Highway to the Danger Zone Takes a Temporary Detour

TSM Model Wings’ 1:200 US Navy Northrop F-5E Tiger II Fighter – “MiG-28” [Aggressor Scheme]

From time-to-time we get a little edgy, particularly when a manufacturer shows product at one show then fails to display it a year later at the very same venue. Such is the case with Sunrich Hobby, who, we have found out, owns Taiwan-based TSM Models, a prolific maker of diecast collectibles. At last year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair, TSM had on display several new aircraft toolings that immediately caught the hobby by storm and helped whet the appetite of many a collector. Oddly, at this year’s show, no such aircraft were anywhere to be seen, leaving this pundit in a lurch and immediately speculating that something had gone wrong.

Turns out all is well in Fightertown USA according to our source at Sunrich, with work proceeding smoothly on the models shown at last year’s show as well some they cannot openly discuss for obvious reasons. If you read between the lines, that means they have locked up the Top Gun 2 license, and pretty much cornered the market on Top Gun 2 collectibles well ahead of the film’s 2020 release. We’ve already learned that the now retired F-14 Tomcat will make an encore performance in Top Gun 2, and its a well known topic of conversation that Tom Cruise, reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, has been seen “puttering around” in the F/A-18 Super Hornet, meaning a new aircraft will join the ranks. What hasn’t been confirmed are some of the other aircraft and drones that will likely be featured in the sequel, meaning lots more subjects to be replicated once the film hits the silver screen.

TSM Model Wings” 1:72 Scale Aircraft Carrier Deck Base with Catapult Operator Figure [Base 1]

For now, the Company has confirmed the imminent release of a 1:200 scale MiG-28, a mythical adversarial aircraft featured in the original film, Top Gun. Also in the works is a remake of their popular 1:72 scale flight deck, which will likely see the light of day this summer. So, while Sunrich and TSM Model Wings aren’t actually showing anything in their aircraft line up at Nuremberg this year, that doesn’t necessarily mean the pump hasn’t already been primed and product, scrutinized and approved by Paramount Films, isn’t already in the pipeline.

Films in Focus: Top Gun 2 Gets Topped Off

Val Kilmer is back as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Pete Mitchell’s chief competitor at the Top Gun academy. Still dangerous after all these years.

According to the Aviation Geek Club, Val Kilmer has signed on to lend his talents to Top Gun 2, thereby reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Tom Cruise. Like Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Iceman will likely portray a fellow naval instructor at the Top Gun academy. The site also claims that Kenny Loggins will re-record Highway to the Danger Zone, the song that helped catapult the film into cinematic stardom. Presently, its not clear if any of the other former actors and actresses that appeared in the original film will be asked to rejoin the cast should the script permit and who will be added to the role call to portray a new class of naval aviators.

Films in Focus: Top Gun 2 Starts Production

On the first day of production on Top Gun 2, Tom Cruise tweeted out this image showing him in the foreground in front of a naval aircraft. Fast forward 30 years, and its likely the F-14 will be swapped out for a more stealthy F-35 Joint Strike Fighter or, as some suggest, this two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet Strike Aircraft.

By now, you’ve likely heard that Tom Cruise signed on to do a sequel to Top Gun, entitled, what else, Top Gun 2. Yesterday he tweeted out an image with the three-word tag line “Feel the Need”, which aptly paraphrases the “Need for Speed” musical montage that helped to launch the original movie into cinematic history over 30 years ago. In the sequel, Cruise, who reprises his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, plays a flight instructor at the world-famous Top Gun Naval School who likely becomes embroiled in a conflict over the contested waters known as the China Seas. Drones and F-35C Joint Strike Fighters will likely take center stage this time around replacing the retired F-14 Tomcats that became the hallmark of the original film.

And, while we’re on the subject of Top Gun, we still have an ample supply of F-14s in both 1:72 and 1:200 scales, along with a bunch of ancillary products that combine to make the displays rich and filled with seat-of-the-pants excitement. Check ’em out now before they fly off into the danger zone.

Films in Focus: Top Gun 2 – Promise of a Premise

Yesterday, actor Tom Cruise leaked word that he and director, Jerry Bruckheimer, were working on the sequel to Top Gun, the 1986 box office smash hit that helped propel Cruise to stardom and give US Navy recruiting a kick in the pants. Little is known about the plot for Top Gun 2 or where it will be set. However, since its now 30 years later, we can likely presume that Cruise’s character, Pete Mitchell, is a flying instructor at the Naval Flying School, and that a younger, fresher face will almost certainly sit in the cockpit this time around, defending the world from whatever is thrown our way. With territorial disputes around the world, and tension rising in a number of geo-political hot spots, it wouldn’t be difficult to presume the enemy could be Iranian, North Korean, Russian or Chinese, flying the latest stealth aircraft or perhaps piloting them remotely with the aid of UCAVs. And, with the Grumman F-14 Tomcat long since retired from the Navy’s active duty roster, and the new Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) aircraft carrier completing its testing and sea trials, its more than likely that whomever is taking on the central role this time around is doing so from the cockpit of a Joint Strike Fighter embarked upon our pride of the fleet. Whew! That’s a lot of speculating going on, but one not without its merits.

Top Gun 2: Cruise vs. Drones

Top Gun

In an April report on The Verge that was gleaned from a HuffPost interview, Jerry Bruckheimer is apparently spilling some of the beans concerning the upcoming feature film, Top Gun 2. Lead actor, Tom Cruise, will once again reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the dapper F-14 ace who rose to the occasion despite his misgivings to rescue his fellow airmen and serve his country in magnificent fashion. This time around, however, Cruise will reportedly square off against a bevy of unmanned combat aerial vehicles, although the reason for the high-speed dogfight and locale are still a mystery. Since the movie has yet to go into production, we are probably looking at a Christmas 2016 airing at the earliest, with replicas likely following.

More information concerning the upcoming film can be found here: http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/1/5570710/top-gun-2-will-feature-tom-cruise-versus-drones-says-jerry-bruckheimer
